In this interactive presentation, we take a peek into the Marshall Islands’ matrilineal culture & history as a way to share stories related to colonization, culture, climate change, etc. to challenge ourselves and “juumemmej” (headstand awake) in these challenging and uncertain times which calls for all of us to stand together. To acknowledge as well as embrace our differences and interconnectedness as we look to the past, present, and future.

*Note: Juumemmej is a Marshallese proverb or term used in circumstances requiring concentration, alertness and sense of responsibility for the welfare of others. Traditionally it was used to describe the circumstance of the helmsman on a long ocean voyage. The helmsman had to keep his eyes on the riggings, the stars, and the wave patterns, and the weather signs while others slept in relative comfort. But the broader meaning of the term challenged everyone especially those in a position of leadership to exercise their authority as seriously as though such ocean conditions prevailed.

Diese interaktive Präsentation gibt einen Einblick in die matrilineare Kultur und Geschichte der Marshall Islands. Sie wird dabei Erzählungen zu Kolonialisierung, Kultur und Klimawandel mit einbringen. Die Referentin wird das Erzählformat des marshallesischen Storytellings anwenden. 

Meitaka Kendall-Lekka, 1983 auf dem Likiep Atoll geboren, gehört zu den Rimwejoor. Seit 2014 ist sie Professorin und Chairperson des Lehrstuhls Business Studies Department am College of Marshall Island, Majuro. Sie besitzt einen MBA der Chaminade University of Honolulu und ist PhD Kandidatin in „Creative Leadership for Innovation and Change“ an der University of U.S. Virgin Islands. Nebst der Beschäftigung mit Internet-basiertem Lernen und Lehren ist Meitaka Kendall-Lekka aktives Mitglied etlicher NGOs, wie z.B. Jo-Jikum, die sich sehr aktiv für Klimaschutz einsetzt. 2019 erhielt sie den “Young Pacific Leaders“-Award für ihr politisches und kulturelles Engagement. Sie lebt seit einem halbem Jahr in Berlin und hat eine Gastprofessur an der Kunsthochschule Weißensee.
